Halloween I watched Halloween by John Carpenter with my full interest. The movie is easily predictable. Putting this movie back into 1978, it greatly throws people of their seats. However, it is no longer working for nowadays and that’s the main direction of watching this movie. The movie sets up the rules for later on science fiction, horror, or even horror science fiction movies. John Carpenter told the world with every aspects of “how to scare people through films”. Roughly about the movie, the movie started 6 years old boy, Michael, the killer of this movie killed his sister inside the joker suit. After the killing, this innocent looking little kid presents himself among his parents beside him with god-like feelings. The camera tells who this boy is going to be and done developing the character within the shot. As expected, Michael is the no-mercy killer later on in this movie. Michael is mainly the character that brings the story forward and set up the horror genre to the entire world. The perspectival rules includes:

Human that is no longer pure is deserved to be killed.

Referring to both sci-fi and horror movies, police or governmental structures are powerless and incapable. They did not do any goods.

“The surviver”: no matter what status that person is, he/she will live.

Death cannot be killed.

The escaper holds the lower cards.

The killer is a good observer. They far away observe the victims from outside. They show when the “signs”(something that take the human away from purity) are shown.

Seemingly, the killing often happens after the nudity or sexual factors.

Carpenter excellently created the horror genre by this movie. Personally, the horror film presents the real facts about human really well. It started to makes me wonder that is it the killer or us that is psychotic?

The Terminator has deservedly earned it’s reputation. What separates it from most films in it’s genre (and some films in general) is it puts story and characters first. Yes, that silver skeleton and glowing red pupils are no doubt one of the most memorable things about the film and have become culturally significant. Yet when one thinks The Terminator scenes such as the T-800’s decimation of an entire police station come to mind. We’re told countless times throughout the film that this thing is unstoppable and all we’ve seen til this point is the title character take some damage to his arm and eye. One cinematic classic catchphrase later and we’re shown why the T-800 is unbeatable. Sarah Connor is in a place she feels safe and is assured multiple times that she’s going to be OK in there. Yet this machine waltzes in only to maim and murder every cop in the building. At least thirty officers have M-16s and the T-800 takes every shot like it’s nothing before spraying them down with everything he’s got and all of them fall to their death. In any other movie this might be a fun scene to watch and applaud the man plowing through the police. It’s a terrifying sequence and one of the best examples of how to use action to advance a story and build a character.

In term of violence, it gives the audiences time to realize that it is complex. The Terminator is smarter than that and presents believable characters from a very conceivable future. Sarah Connor’s change from naive, stupid girl to tough super woman is poetry. She only curses once and that’s at the end of the picture when she terminates the T-800. She’s never once annoying as Linda Hamilton is golden as a girl who thinks she’s worthless, but ends up responsible for mankind’s salvation. It’s interesting to watch Terminator 2 and see her do an incredible job as a tough woman in Sarah Connor then come back to this one and see her just as spectacular as a naive girl. Michael Biehn isn’t a slouch either as Kyle Reese. Much like the title character, he’s on a mission and will not fail. Kyle is the viewers connection to the desolate future as many times the movie shows us how he’s haunted by that horror. Cameron doesn’t glorify this future as a place you’d want to take battle in, but creates a world that’s as ghastly as Reese dreams it to be. These sequences don’t show Reese as a hero who takes out eight Terminators with one explosive or a phaser. People die, and much like the 1984 in this film, you’re always in fear of the Terminator. Another small nuance either added by Cameron or Biehn but Reese never turns on the headlights to any of the cars he drives. I like to think it’s because he’s accustomed to hiding from Hunter Killers and would not want to attract attention. However, this is the film that blows people minds from one generation to another.

Time Crimes

Cheap budget science fiction movie? How terrible is that going to be? It is just impossible to get all the science fiction’s props without big budget right? That was my first thought from before the i watched the film. Tho, the recommendation from my professor is quite impressive. I still stand on my own ideas that this is going to be so lame.

The movie begins normally, the main character introduces and presents himself to the audience as a super normal guy. The sign of conflicts happens when he tried to talk to the unknown phone call. All the consequences lead him into the forest, then HECTOR started to blows my mind away.

It turns out that this science fiction structure of this movie is going back into time. Therefore, HECTOR travels back into time without any doubt. At this point, while HECTOR ONE is looking at himself, Virgalondo(the director) leaves the audience to guess what will happen next. Seemingly, nothing can stop us from thinking about it. I tried to figure out what will happen. I was totally right; on the other hand, my figuration was also a total failure. I was thinking that: of course, there will be HECTOR TWO, THREE, FOUR ,and so on. They will keep repeating their past but …wait a minute, that’s just impossible because the movie will never ends. What now ? I started to pay full attention. The director messes around with my mind. I don’t know about others audiences, but i was totally lost with myself.

Until the last HECTOR appears, he amazing moves this movie to the end, and also gives the answer to the audiences. The significant techniques of developing the story with cheap budget ,and three settings blow the audiences away. This film proves that there’s a limitation on money, props, settings, but not the idea of writing this story: TIME CRIMES.

Eastwood fortunately leaves his western 70s cowboys into Dirty Harry for the audiences to see. When i watch the film, i expected the smell of 70s in advance, but i didn’t prepare myself good enough. I suffered through this movie with a smile. It reminds me of others movies in a really “cheesy” way. Isn’t Harry Callahan supposed to be a cool detective and not a cowboy? “Did he fire six shots or only five? Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement, I’ve kinda lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you’ve got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya punk?” This sentence simply explain about dirty harry and his style which emphasized how Eastwood wanted to develop the western genre into a modern world’s point of view.

The story in Dirty Harry involves a parsimonious serial killer. For the rock bottom price of only one hundred thousand dollars, he will agree not to kill a new San Francisco citizen every day. I checked, and, even taking inflation into account, this would be less than half a million in today’s dollars. Sounds like a bargain. Needless to say, the money isn’t paid successfully, although the mayor tries, which means that the killings continue. So, here is another modern-western genre support; Scorpio(the killer) is running away from Harry while fighting him back at the same time. He running away with unknown direction then come back when “it’s a time to kill”. Isn’t that sounds similar to you. The western genre theme is showing after the chasing between Harry and Scorpio is happening. The movie offers several explanations as to how Harry came to be called Dirty Harry. Among other reasons are: his jobs are dirty, his actions are dirty and he’s a dirty old man. Well, hold the word “old.” Clint Eastwood may be old now, but back then he was a 40-year-old guy who looked a decade younger.

This is it for the movie that made me smile of how stylish it is.

Not saying about any technical or abstract terms, I would say this movie is simply beautiful. The set up of every elements in the movie just flow together really well. The movie is fulfilled of Eastwood experience on western culture, hero, genre, tradition, and everything. Eastwood is expressing everything about western, and also changing it by showing the other side of western to the audiences. He created the new impression to the audience on western film.

Unforgiven is started by showing how “western” the place is; giving the basic environment of western then cut into the room where the man having sex with prostitute. Suddenly, there is something going on in the next door. The other man accused another prostitute that she stole his things, he cut her up. A group of prostitutes in the town of Big Whiskey have offered a bounty of $500 each for the two cowboys who slashed and scarred pretty Delilah (Anna Thomson). Big Whiskey’s sheriff, Little Bill Daggett (Gene Hackman), let the cowboys off easy, making them pay six horses to the brothel owner to compensate for Delilah’s loss of market value. Outraged at the sexist insult, the hookers led by Strawberry Alice (the excellent Frances Fisher) pool their money in a prefeminist call for justice. Then the journey of the “them cowboys” hunting for the rewards money go on.

The film is showing the non-limitation of western film by “spinning” around the western myth that people have before the 70′s. The movie started with violence ends with many other terms except violence. That was just one of the example of how Eastwood broke all the myth about western. As mentioned, every element in the movie have their roll of “expressing” in the film. For example, the movie started with sunset and a man digging, then the movie ends with the sunset of the man walking out from the house and stop at where he was digging in the beginning of the movie. The sunset abstractly represents the beginning and the end of something. As the favorite quote in the movie says: “We all have it coming”.

The Forbidden Door

The movie makes me feel i like i want to throw up all the amaze and greatness of this movie. The Forbidden Door is about an sculpture artist who interest in building a sculpture of pregnant women. He looks at a pregnant woman as a beautiful artwork that decorating this world. One of the things i like about this movie is that the movie is not making me feel bias on main character. I wasn’t sure if i should totally agree with him or not. Therefore, i support neither sides of the main character and the movie itself.

This movie breaks all the rules of storytelling which makes it so amazing. It reveals something that shouldn’t be since the middle part of the story. “The reveal” puts the audiences into another position. The audience started to look at the movie differently. The point of views are changed. The other side of the movie started to tells the story. Getting there was a great idea, however, the director is saying through the movie that “You shouldn’t miss a point!”. The movie runs simply; not too abstract. How the director is trying to tell the story is the key of this movie.

This kind of “breaking the rules technique” is attaching you to the movie. How much attached?; well i would say that i really don’t want to look down at my popcorn and pick a whole bunch. However, the movie is showing the clear purpose of the story as the simple idea of every movie; real world to imaginary world then back to the old world. The main character got a problem caused by his wife. The audiences are knowing the solution of the problem is himself and what is inside him.

The Forbidden Door creates a difference in the world film industries. People will started to look at many story differently. Moreover, it taught me that i shouldn’t look at the movie only by one side, tho it apparently has one side.

Movie Night

This clip started with the scenes of people and the environment. The scene is shot beautifully with a wide angle and having the nice arrangement of composition. It emphasizes the feeling of the environment of the scene in a very short period and then cut into this crowded and tight feeling. This beginning scene is showing the environment where the main character which is the boy is living in. The cut is putting the audiences back into the world of this little boy only then the theme of the movie is showing throughout what the kid is doing. He is showing what is “the movie” is referring to himself.

The true “movie” that actually means something to the boy is started from the scene where he gets to play with the shadow on the projecting screen. The director is trying to tell what “movie” is all about. Movie is an entertainment media that entertain people. Therefore, the whole point of this clip is that what is a real “movie” to the boy is not what is projecting on the screen, but it is where he lives his live and what he gets to play and learn something with.

Killer of Sheep

When i first started to watch this movie i was trying to catch the plot of the story. I didn’t yet get an idea of what is going on then the realism and every elements of this movie (characters, active and non-active props, sound ,etc.) got all my interest and attention. Therefore, the plot of the story is the big idea which is saying family, financial, kid and adult, money and dignity, and being black is poetically a difference as the other side of the world.

Killer of Sheep, a film by Charles Burnett, the African American who thought that there wasn’t any words or a movie that had describe the African American’s life yet in 1977. This significantly becomes a blueprint for other “black films” later on. The movie started with black father yelling at his black son. This scene directly gives the two main themes of this movie: black people and their harsh lives. Stan is the main character of this movie. He appears to be an upset man ,but he is only upset with himself. Stan is a sheep killer which few times in the movie; it cuts back to where he is working at the sheep killing industries. Not such pleasured job, but personally sheep is contrasting between sheep and Stan . While the sheep just waiting for the day that they have to die, Stan do not. Stan suffers with all the problems on himself, family, and the society. Moreover, it is obvious that his life never been fully pleasured. However, he keeps his head up and faces it. Stan is not “a super black guy” who actually good at everything. He tries to hard on everything he is doing. He never realizes what he is actually got which is his family. Many times in the movie, his family is trying to please him, and deeply trying to show him that what he got which is his family is already enough. On the other hand, the sheep may represents the innocence. The innocence of Stan, he have nothing wrong. He is technically innocent; he shouldn’t be “punishes” with this kind of live.

Another major point of this movie is between the world of an adult and the kids. While adults suffers with all the depression. The kids potentially builds the idea of how their life going to be just like others adults in the movie when they grow up which is being showed in the way they play. They don’t have any proper toys. However, the point is that the way they play is reflecting the violent world that they are living in. It also plans the idea on how their future is going to be.

Charles Burnett presents this film in a very gentle way which is very different from what is actually in the movie. I think that he is trying to show that how he is used to this kind of environment. He is presenting the audiences about what he saw in his society, and in the same time, he is saying: “i am used to it” by using this gentle style of storytelling. He wasn’t the professional directors, but what I actually saw here is something that came from the deep down in his heart which makes the film became significant.
